Halloween Meet in Derry/Londonderry – What a Time We Had!

What a fantastic few days we shared in Derry/Londonderry, with 39 vans arriving to soak up the Halloween magic! Our new venue at Oakgrove Integrated Primary School was a resounding success — ideally located with a bus stop right outside and just a short stroll to the Peace Bridge, it made exploring the City a breeze.

Although we didn't have access to the hall, it didn't really matter as there was so much to see and do a short walk away in the surrounding area. A few eager vans rolled in on Wednesday, with more joining as the week unfolded, building up to a lively and memorable gathering.

Thursday kicked off with a warm welcome and a delicious lunch at Brigade Cricket Club —hearty stew, apple tart with cream, tea, coffee, and shortbread, all for just a fiver! The afternoon was filled with music, laughter, and great craic with the locals, who couldn’t have been more welcoming. The evening was left open for catching up with old friends, making new ones, or venturing into the City — despite the truly dreadful weather!

Friday was Halloween, and the City was absolutely buzzing. Thankfully, the rain held off, allowing many of us to enjoy sightseeing, shopping, and a well-earned rest in one of the many pubs offering traditional music. As night fell, we found our spots to watch the legendary parade and the spectacular fireworks.

Saturday morning saw many of us heading to the British Legion for a mighty fry-up in support of the Poppy Appeal — a perfect start to the day. That evening, we returned for a brilliant night of music, dancing, and chat. Once again, the locals made us feel right at home and shared how much they’re looking forward to welcoming us back next year.

On Sunday morning we gathered in front of the host’s van where Selma (and Elmer) thanked their co-hosts Jacqueline and Mark for their support throughout the five days, and extended warm thanks to everyone who attended the Meet. The number plate draws were won by David McFadden and Gary Sheridan, and the “Best Dressed Motorhome” prize went to Robert and Beverly Coulter — well done!.

Finally, Selma shared warm wishes on behalf of the Committee and the entire club to Robert and Iris McEwan, hoping they enjoy many happy adventures in their beautiful new motorhome. Safe travels to all — we hope you had a smooth journey home and we can’t wait to see you again very soon! Beverly Coulter.
